Owner surrender information

  • Owner surrenders are accepted by appointment only.
  • Stray Haven reserves the right to deny any admission of a pet to our adoption program.
  • There is a fee associated with surrendering a pet.
  • There might be a waiting period before we have the space for a new pet; it could be weeks.
  • Priority is placed on Tioga County Residents.
  • We participate and advocate for Trap-Neuter/Spay-Release (TNR) as the most humane and acceptable method to manage feral, or poorly socialized cats.  If you have cats that cannot be handled on your property, please contact us about getting them TNR'd.
  • Stray Haven CANNOT accept stray dogs from the public. Any stray dog is to be picked up by the Dog Control Officer (DCO) for that town. The current contact information is listed below.

Surrendering Process:

1. Call us to discuss the reason for surrendering the pet; staff will inquire as to whether we can help to keep the pet in your home through a variety of options.

2. If it is decided that you still need to surrender your pet, we will ask you to complete a surrender survey over the phone (5-15 minutes).

3. We will schedule a follow-up call with the Cat Care or Dog Care Supervisor to either schedule your surrender or place your pet on the intake waiting list.

4. Arrive at Stray Haven for your scheduled appointment; make sure to bring all medical information; vaccines, medical history, etc. All animals will receive a behavioral evaluation before admission,  if their actions are unsuitable, they will not be accepted into our adoption program.

5. Owners will be asked to complete a lengthy surrender packet and pay the surrender fee at this time.
